A history of Macao
According to legend, a junk boat found itself in a sudden storm in the China Sea. Everyone on board panicked and were preparing to meet their doom, when a beautiful young woman, who had just come aboard stood up and commanded the sea to become calm once more. Miraculously, the winds subsided and the sea became calm, allowing the junk to continue its voyage to the port of Hoi Keang. The woman went ashore, and then proceeded to climb the hill of Barra from where she ascended to heaven. A temple was built in homage to her on the exact spot where she set foot on land.
In the 16th century, when the Portuguese sailors asked the name of the place, the locals responded A-ma-Gao (Bay of A-ma), which gave the peninsula the name. Over time, this was transformed from Amagao to Macau.
Macau has always had its own distinct atmosphere. Today, it is still a harmonious mixture of Chinese and Portuguese culture, which gives it a unique cultural identity. Today, Macau is a “special administrative region” of the Popular Republic of China since December 20th 1999, and retains its own social and economic characteristics, in accordance with the principle "one country, two systems".
Gambling was legalised in Macau in the 1850’s, when the Portuguese Government legalised the activity in the colony. Since then, Macau has been known the world over as the "Monte–Carlo of the East", and gambling became an important part of the city’s economy. Until Western casino games were introduced over the course of the 20th century, only Chinese games were played, the most popular of which was “Fan-Tan”.
Macau is listed in the list of ten most popular casino and gambling destinations. According to a recent survey, Macau leapt from the 20th to the 6th spot, in terms of incoming tourism as a direct result of the increased number of casinos present everywhere in the city. For the first time in history, the casino revenue from the industry surpassed that of Las Vegas in 2009!
