In 1988, a dozen casinos were opened and the number of annual visitors increased by 700,000 in 1988 to more than 33 million. In 2000, the tax base of the town increased to more than $ 6.7 billion, compared with $ 316 million in 1976. The positive impact on residents of Atlantic City can be seen in revitalized areas, new housing projects and public services. A second wave of development is underway.
